To begin with you will need to open up the coconut.  Please check out this page to find out the best way to do this.

Here are your two coconut halves

Here is the grater.  It latches on to the table edge.

Put the coconut and the grater  together and it looks like this:

Turn the handle and press the coconut into the blades.

Keep going...and in no time at all you will have soft, fresh delicious coconut flakes.

When you are done, wash the grater and you may use the blade covers for storage.

The only thing to really know about this coconut grater is that it has a clamp that screws it to the table and it is this clamp that holds the grater in place while it is in use.

It takes some pressure of the coconut against the blades as they turn, but our entire family tried it and all of the children age 7 and above had no trouble with it.  Of course the oldest and strongest children were very fast at making the fine shreds and they had races.  It took only a few minutes for me to grate each coconut half.   My oldest son and husband were very fast.

This coconut grater is a household appliance in Srilanka.  I have been told that all the homes have them.  Any home that wants to use fresh coconuts in the US is going to need one too.  This is the nicest of several models available.
