Annette's Visit to Asia, "Changing a Community"

In October 2010 I traveled to Asia to visit many of our long-time suppliers, meet with new ones and discover exciting new foods. One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the manufacturers of our Centrifuged Coconut Oil. This producer is on the island of Mindanao. Mindanao is a large southern Philippine island and its name means The Land of Promise. It has higher crime and corruption than most other islands in the Philippines; so many Americans do not feel safe traveling there. It did Crazy Tonynot take long, however, for my fears to turn into amazement. I was so blessed by my visit and truly treasure the people who live there.

To the left is “Crazy Tony.” He is a bright, intelligent entrepreneur who originally had a small manufacturing facility that employed a handful of people from the area. They call him “crazy” because he is full of energy, always happy, works very hard and eats 3 to Caribou4 tablespoons of coconut oil a day. He has designed and developed all of his processes and “twinked” his equipment, striving to make the purest, highest quality, raw, centrifuged, certified organic extra virgin coconut oil in the world.

To my delight, as we drove down the country road to the factory there were children playing with a ball in a field, swallow-like birds swooping over the grassy areas eating insects and a carabao (Philippine buffalo) grazing under the shade of the coconut trees. The scene was peaceful, clean, natural, and serene.

Grating CoconutsAt the factory, I watched the entire process, from the grating of the coconuts to the pressing of the coconut cream to the centrifuge extraction of pure coconut oil.Coconut CreamCoconut Oil

Coconut Oil BarrelsNestled in a room adjacent to the production area were 80 new barrels full of fresh virgin coconut oil awaiting shipment to us. That afternoon, as we watched everyone working and spoke with Tony, the ocean-going container actually pulled up to receive those barrels bound for America.

To my surprise, the warehouse staff began getting soapy water in buckets and Ship Containerwashed out the inside of this container, allowing it to dry before loading. I was told there was a little bit of white flour inside the container, but they told me they always wash the container before they load it.

When the entire staff began to stop production and clean up their areas I learned that once the container wasCleaning the Container Before Shipment loaded they would have a small celebration. Tony and his crew are so thankful and appreciative of their jobs, and the blessings that come from this operation that everytime a container of centrifuged oil leaves for America (Wilderness Family Naturals purchases everthing they produce) they have a little party to celebrate. You can not imagine how this made me feel. It was then that the magnitude of how we are affecting this Restaurantcommunity began to hit me.

I was told that they now have 55 employees and run 3 shifts, 24 hours a day, 6 days a week just to keep up with our orders. Then I was told there were two restaurants in the town nearby that stay open 24 hours a day just to serve these employees. This means that not only are we providing an income for 55 families in a beautiful, simple area of the Philippines, but additionally there are two restaurants and who knows how many other businesses and people that are being impacted.

RestaurantI was treated with respect and honor. The people were kind, polite and thankful. And I was so blessed to meet them and see the difference we are making in their lives. But, it really all comes back to you, our wonderful customers. We are honored to be in the position of connecting you together, but it is you who are impacting the lives of these families by purchasing the fruits of their labor. Thank you for the difference you are making to this small, admirable group of people in the Philippines.

Sincerely,
Annette Fischer and Everyone at Wilderness Family Naturals
