Goldenberries are a small yellow-orange fruit that come from
a low growing plant that is in the tomato/green pepper/potato family. They
are also called Incan berries and in the US: ground
cherries. The seeds are often labeled: Chinese
Lantern in seed catalogs. These little fruits originate in South
American cultures and have been used by them for thousands of years. They
have a unique sweet and tart taste and make great snack. Some say the taste
is a bit lemony, others say a bit like pineapples, and still others describe
it as a citrus-like flavor. Never-the-less, in a
1⁄8th cup serving you will receive
12% of the RDI of fiber and 45% of the RDI of
vitamin A. Iron, vitamin C and protein is also present, yet these
berries are low in fat and do not contain a lot of simple sugars.
