Walnuts are a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids. A quarter of a cup provides 50.4% of the daily value for this essential fatty acid. In addition walnuts contain an antioxidant compound called ellagic acid that supports the immune system. Walnuts are also relatively high in L-arginine, an essential amino acid. In the body, L-arginine is converted into nitric oxide, a chemical that helps keep the inner walls of blood vessels smooth and allows blood vessels to relax. This is why people with angina (heart pain) often take nitroglycerine tablets or use patches. It is the nitric oxide it produces that relaxes the blood vessels (especially of the heart) reducing the pain. Foods high in L-arginine help the body produce its own nitric oxide.
