What are Goji Berries?

These whole, naturally-dried goji/wolfberries are about the size of a raisin.  They are not as sweet as raisins, but they are not as tart as sour cherries or cranberries.  There is no fruit in the American diet that I know of that tastes similar to a goji berry. For a 2-sided flyer on Wilderness Family Naturals goji/wolfberries please click here.

Goji berries/Wolfberries are bright red and the plants often reach 12 feet tall.  They are found throughout China and Tibet.  If you search the internet, you will notice there are websites who sell wolfberries and websites who sell goji berries.  Some claim they have only wolfberries because they are far superior to goji berries. Many others claim goji berries are the only true health promoting, high anti-oxidant wild berry of China or Tibet.  Both China and Tibet areas are famous for their goji berries. To find out more about these different regions and where the best berries are found, please click here.

The goji berry, native to China and Tibet, has been highly regarded for centuries for its nutritional and therapeutic properties.  It is found in many ancient medical books from the region.  People who have a whole, natural-food approach to regaining and maintaining health should consider adding goji/wolfberries to their diet.  There is evidence that nutrients in the goji berry improve cell communication and have anti-oxidant as well as anti-inflammatory properties.  These substances have been shown to increase mitochondrial function and detoxification.  It has also been shown that nutrient dense, whole foods, such as the goji berry, are superior to supplements.

Goji berries are considered to be one of the most nutritious food sources on the planet.  Grown in fertile valleys, they are rich in anti-oxidant carotenoids including Beta-carotene and Zeaxanthin.  They contain B-complex vitamins, Vitamin C (500 times more than oranges), and important polysaccharides.  These little berries contain more protein than whole wheat (they are 10% protein) and supply 19 different amino acids, including all 8 essential amino acids. In addition, goji berries are loaded with many phytonutrients.  For more information on the nutritional benefits of Goji/Wolfberries please click here.

Wilderness Family Naturals’ goji berries are harvested each fall and dried naturally.  They are not fumigated, sweetened, or processed in any way.  These berries have a green certificate issued by the Chinese government (A green certificate is a certificate issued by the Chinese government’s Certified Organic Program - similar to the USDA National Organic Program.  Green Certificates, however, are not recognized by the USDA at this time).  For information on how goji/wolfberries are sized and graded and how to select high quality goji/wolfberries, please click here.

Most Americans would like some help on how to get started with goji berries and suggestions on how to incorporate them into their diet.  Therefore, we have created a page called “How Do I Use Goji Berries?”  just for you.

Activated Charcoal

In our last newsletter I mentioned goldenseal root as an herb that everyone interested in natural health should have in their “medicine chest.”  Second to goldenseal is charcoal. No “medicine chest” is complete without it.  Activated Charcoal has tremendous adsorptive properties.  Here are some of it's uses:

  • Charcoal can be used as a poultice on the skin for bee stings, spider bites, poison ivy, poison oak, and anything that is a toxic irritant to the skin or poisonous to the body.

  • Charcoal can be used with the flu to neutralize toxins in the stomach created by the virus.   It will stop the bad cramps, nausea, or vomiting associated with the flu.

  • Charcoal can be used for dyspepsia.  This is caused by poor digestion. Charcoal neutralizes the gases and products of purification. Gas, bloating and pressure can all be resolved by using charcoal.

  • Charcoal is very effective for neutralizing poisons that are ingested.

  • Charcoal can be a part of various detoxification programs.  Both with standard detoxifying (especially during fasts) and with mercury detoxifying.

  • Charcoal can be used to purify water.

Why I Chose a Home Birth

Having worked in the medical system for years, most people thought it quite odd that I would choose homebirth, especially for my first baby.  However, this was quite a strategic move for me.  It sent me headlong into the world of alternative medicine, which I had only “dabbled in” previously. As time passed I learned more and more. The more I learned, the more determined I was to have my children at home.

My first born, Logan, is now 19 years old and leaving for college this fall. I wrote this article long hand while waiting for work to be done on our car.  Logan then typed this story into the computer.  It is a story he was not familiar with.  When he finished, he thanked me for having birthed him at home.  He also, for the first time, told me how much he appreciates reading the stories I share with others.

Lemonade Recipe

This lemonade recipe comes highly recommended from one of our employees.  It is alkalinizing, loaded with electrolytes and energy. It contains coconut oil, and is thirst quenching.  Now that warmer days are upon us we felt it was something we should share with others. Enjoy!

3 lemons, 1 pear, 3-4 TBL coconut oil, 1 tsp. celtic sea salt, 6 TBL raw honey, 6 cups of water

Use organic fruit and pure water.  If you don't have raw honey, you can use another natural sweetener.

1. Peel the lemons with a vegetable peeler, leaving on the wonderful white pith of the lemon (it has lots of bioflavonoids).  Cut in 2-4 parts.

2. Quarter and core the pear.

3. Place the lemon, pear, coconut oil, sea salt, honey and 4 cups of water into your blender.

4. Blend for about 30 seconds.  Add the remaining 2 cups of water and blend until smooth.

You can adjust the amount of honey to vary the sweetness.

Variations:

  • add MSM powder
  • add a couple handfuls of cranberries (fresh or frozen).  It will turn a bright pink color
    and taste great.

Recipe adapted from the book LifeFood Recipe Book: Living on Life Force by Annie Padden Jubb and David Jubb, which will soon be available from Wilderness Family Naturals.
